Severe obesity is defined as having a body mass index of at least 40, which typically translates into being at least 100 pounds overweight. A 5' 10" man is severely obese if he weighs 300 pounds. He is overweight if he weighs more than 160 pounds. A 5' 4" woman is severely obese at 250 pounds and she his over weight if she weighs more than 125 pounds.
To calculate body mass index, multiply weight in pounds by 703 and divide by height in inches squared.

IN A RECENT STUDY IT WAS FOUND THAT ONE IN FIFTY AMERCANS WERE SEVERELY OBESE.
In a recent study the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel indicates that the proportion of Americans who are severely obese has increased by a multiple of 4 in the past 15 years.
I find this latest bit of news quite disturbing to say the least. America has an alarming rate of rising obesity. Many doctors have considered severe obesity to be an uncommon conditon that largely represents a fixed percentage of people. The study's author, Rosan Sturm, senior economist with the RAND Corp., said as simple obesity increases, severe obesity grows even faster.
"There is no evidence that it (the obesity rate) is flattening out", Sturm said. " It's full speed ahead." The current trend indicates that by 2040 our American population will have 80 percent dangerously obese. Sturm's study appeared Monday, Oct 13. 2003, in the Archives of Internal Medicine and is based on nationwide telephone surveys conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Sturm indicated something we in the Herbalife community have known for sometime. That is simply that this current trend is largely the result of the increasing affordability of Calorie-dense food, Usually found in Fast Food Places.
Fortunatly there is hope. Since this problem seems to stem from bad eating habits, it would seem that we need to change our dietary regime. Studys have shown that watching your Carbohydrates, not the calories, will trim the fat away and gives a more healthy, youthful, and Useful body.
Think about it. What are calories. The word "calorie" itself means "heat". Calories, when used properly help to actually burn the fat away. So what we need to do is plan a diet that is high in Protien and low in Carbohydrates. Don't worry about the calories. One of my clients recently told me some "amazing news". She said, "George, I just lost 10 pounds this last week." I told her that was why she was taking our dietary products. "No, no you don't understand," she said. "I really pigged out this weekend and don't know why I lost weight and didn't gain any." I asked her what she had. She told me that she had "feasted" on chicken breasts, green beans, water chestnuts, and mashed potatoes and gravy. Well except for the mashed potatoes and gravy the rest of her "pig out" is largely in keeping with a good dietary practice.
